Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has offered to support families affected by the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that claimed the lives of 16 students and left dozens injured.
Speaking after the tragedy, Sonko said his foundation was ready to assist families struggling to meet funeral expenses amid difficult economic conditions. He emphasized the urgency of support given the scale of the incident.
“Hawakupangia hizi vifo na hii economy ya Kenya vile iko sasa, poverty iko juu sana. Watu hawana pesa,” Sonko said.
He pledged to cover funeral-related costs, including providing coffins and transporting bodies to different parts of the country.
“Kama kuna families hazitajiweza kununua sanduku tutapeana. Kama ni transport of bodies any part of the country tutapeana. Tutasimama na hizi familia ambazo zimefinyiwa na the most vulnerable ones,” he said.
Sonko added that assistance would be extended without discrimination, ensuring that all families in need receive help.
