Kirk Whalum Reveals Untold Story Behind Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ Ahead of One Night Only Concert

Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum has received a warm welcome in Kenya as anticipation builds ahead of his upcoming Nairobi performance during the Madaraka Day weekend.
The acclaimed American musician, known for his work across jazz, gospel and R&B, appeared on Classic FM with presenters Maina Kageni and Mwalimu King’ang’i, where he reflected on his music, faith and long-running career.
Whalum’s visit comes as organisers prepare for what has been described as a premium, black-tie concert experience inspired by high-end Las Vegas productions.

‘You Have To Retain Your Own Identity’

During the interview, Maina recalled how seeing Whalum’s name on a record always carried weight for him because of the saxophonist’s reputation and musicianship.
Asked whether he feels pressure to match the stature of other major artists he has worked alongside, Whalum stressed the importance of authenticity.
“You have to retain your own identity no matter what people say,” he said. “I came with an identity to play gospel.”
Whalum has built an international career spanning decades, collaborating with leading names in contemporary music while maintaining strong gospel influences in his work
