This is shortly after Senator Edwin Sifuna publicly stated that he and several allies were removed from an internal Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party WhatsApp group following a political tour in Kitale, reflecting ongoing wrangles within the party.

Sifuna remains a vocal critic of President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, making any alliance or deputy-seeking scenario politically unrealistic.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna says he and several allies have been removed from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) WhatsApp group, describing the move as the latest sign that the party leadership is pushing out members opposed to its growing cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration.

This is even as infighting and divisions within the late Raila Odinga’s ODM deepen as the party navigates its future about 13 months before Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

The fallout comes after Sifuna was removed as the party’s Secretary-General and Senate Minority Whip, while a faction associated with Oburu Odinga continues to push for closer ties with Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance, including discussions on a possible pre-election coalition.

“It’s them who are kicking us out,” Sifuna said during an interview on a local TV station on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

“I remember on Saturday when we finished our rally in Kitale, I just saw all of us being removed from the ODM WhatsApp group. It’s not me who’s leaving. They kicked us out. All of us.”

The senator said the WhatsApp group removal reflected a broader campaign to sideline leaders who have questioned the party’s recent political direction.

Sifuna has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of ODM’s rapprochement with President Ruto, arguing that the party risks abandoning its identity as Kenya’s leading opposition movement by drawing closer to the government.

He said he and other leaders had spent months trying to convince the party leadership to chart a different course but had been met with resistance.

“It is obvious, and the public will be left to judge that we have tried,” Sifuna said.

“Those of us who are in ODM who believe that the party should take a different direction have tried to fight for the soul of the party, but we are getting dangerously close to the election, and it is clear that our colleagues in the party have no time for us.”

According to Sifuna, he deliberately avoided taking actions that could split the party despite being stripped of senior positions.

“I personally feel that I have kept my promise to my boss that I would not be the one to wreck the party,” he said.
