ODM leader Raila Odinga was on Monday heckled in Muhoni when he tried to address residents. Raila had paid a visit to the proposed special economic zone site in Ombeyi, which turned chaotic after some residents held protests.
The protesting locals claimed their ancestral land was reverted to the Kisumu Municipal Council after torrential rains pounded the region, flooding the area for months in the early 1980s.
Controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna has in turn cheered the locals for interrupting Raila’s speech. He argued that they should not allow anyone to grab your land, whether it is President Uhuru Kenyatta, his opposition counterpart Raila or an ‘amorphous thing called “Government”.
‘To the gallant people of KANO, Ombeyi: SOLIDARITY!Protest! Resist! Revolt!Don’t allow anyone to grab your land: whether it is Uhuru Kenyatta, @RailaOdinga or an amorphous thing called “Government.”Revolt against all acts of impunity!” tweeted Miguna Miguna.
The displaced locals were moved to safer ground. The land was consequently registered under the council. The locals now want the land reverted and compensation before the project begins.
The residents carried placards and said the Handshake should not be used to grab land.
This protests happened while Raila addressed residents at the opening of Industrial park within the area.
