Two senior police officers from Kisii County have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe from a member of the public.
The officers, identified as Chief Inspector Nicholas Waringa, the DCIO for Kitutu Central Sub-County, and Corporal Lovy Ochieng Ouya of Nyanchwa Police Station, were arrested following investigations into claims that they demanded money in exchange for carrying out their official duties.
According to EACC, the arrests were triggered by a complaint from a member of the public who alleged that the officers had demanded KSh100,000 to facilitate the arrest of an individual accused of illegally occupying a parcel of land in Nyanchwa Estate, Kisii County, and constructing structures on it.
The anti-graft agency launched investigations into the complaint and mounted an operation that culminated in the arrest of the two officers. EACC detectives allege that the officers were apprehended after receiving KSh40,000, said to be part of the amount they had demanded from the complainant.
The arrests have once again placed the spotlight on corruption allegations within law enforcement agencies, particularly claims that some officers exploit vulnerable members of the public by demanding bribes before taking action on legitimate complaints.
Following their arrest, the two officers were escorted to the EACC Kisii Regional Office, where they underwent processing before being released on a cash bail of KSh50,000 each pending the completion of investigations.
The commission said investigations are continuing and that appropriate action will be taken once the inquiry is concluded.
EACC has reiterated its commitment to fighting corruption in public institutions and urged Kenyans to report cases involving bribery, abuse of office and other forms of misconduct by public officials.
The case is expected to attract significant public interest as concerns continue to grow over corruption within agencies tasked with enforcing the law and protecting citizens.
