Former Prime Minister and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga had been battling several serious health conditions in the months leading up to his death in India on October 15, 2025.
Medical reports released after his passing indicated that the 80-year-old statesman was undergoing treatment for diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease at a specialized wellness facility in Kerala, India. According to doctors, these underlying conditions had significantly affected his health and placed him at a higher risk of cardiovascular complications.
Sources familiar with his medical care revealed that Raila had traveled to India seeking specialized treatment and rehabilitation. He was reportedly recovering at an Ayurvedic treatment center when tragedy struck. On the morning of October 15, Odinga collapsed while taking a routine walk within the facility’s premises. Medical personnel immediately rushed to his aid and initiated emergency resuscitation efforts before transferring him to Devamatha Hospital. Despite extensive efforts by doctors, he was pronounced dead after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Further reports suggested that the veteran politician had also been managing complications related to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition that affects blood circulation and increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events. Medical experts stated that the combination of diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and circulatory complications had made his overall condition increasingly fragile.
Health records cited by various media outlets also showed that Raila’s health challenges stretched back decades. During his detention in the early 1990s, human rights organizations documented concerns about his deteriorating health, including diabetes and recurring chest, back, and stomach pains. Those close to him said the years of political struggle, imprisonment, and a demanding public life had taken a significant toll on his wellbeing.
Following his death, tributes poured in from across Kenya, Africa, and the international community. President William Ruto described Odinga as a towering statesman whose contribution to democracy and governance would be remembered for generations. His death marked the end of a political career that spanned more than four decades and left an indelible mark on Kenya’s history.
