Obado says fellow inmates constantly tease him with dramatic warnings, claiming that “newcomers must always stay alert,” although most of the comments end in laughter.
“They’ve even appointed unofficial ‘security advisers’ who keep reminding me to protect my dignity,” he continues. “I’ve never received so much unsolicited advice in my life.”
In his statements he says older inmates reassure him that the scary stories are mostly exaggerated and that respect is earned through good conduct rather than fear.
The former Migori governor concludes by writing, “I’ve discovered that prison isn’t just about locked doors ,it’s also about surviving endless jokes from people who have mastered the art of teasing newcomers.”
